Final Session: Self Evaluation of my academic year (2009)!

The 2009 was really exhausting for all of us. We started at the first days of March knowing absolutely nothing about your professors, classmates, subjects, hours for lunch and specially, how time consuming might be studing veterinary medicine. This was a whole new world for me a, who was studing architecture in USACH on 2008!
Nevertheless, doing a balance of 2009, I think that my personal performance on academical issues was good, and we learnt how control nerves with complicated subjects as Anatomy and some important basic topics for a future veterinary doctor.
Now, we are living the end of the second term of 2010, and I can tell you that first year at our university is nothing compared with upper years!


I started first term of 2009 at beginnig of march I think. We had a few subjects, being Chemistry, Maths and Zoology the most important of all.
For that time, I knew like 3 persons and only they accompanied me at the university...but with the pass of days, we could know more friends.
This first term was really bad for me, that beacuse I failed Chemistry and Maths, two of the three important subjects!!! I felt really sad and lost, because this was my second career and as I failed some subjects I belived that veterinary was not for me. I felt really depress, but I could finish the term.


Second term was very positive in comparison to the previous one. We come back from holidays in Agoust I think, and it was better because you had already know people, roomclasses and most professors, so it was not as shocking as the first term.
In this stage we had a lot complicated subjects as Biology, Biostatistics, Histology, BIOCHEMISTRY and ANATOMY!
I started really scared because of my anterior performance at firt term, but with each test result received I could notice that my hours of study have being rewarded. Some friends started to think that I am some kind of nerd because of my good marks ajhjahahhahjajha but I just study, nothing more, nothing less, and if we have more free timefor us, our marks will be better!
But nothing is perfect, and I could notice that because of Anatomy. It was so difficult, you had to memorize all muscles, bones and each single part of it. When we finished an anatomy exam, I was just loughing of me because I answered 18 of 35 questions. But, at the end, I pass Anatomy with an avarage of 4.3!


Finally, I evaluated my personal performance in 2009 with a 6! I learnt a lot new stuff and, something that is really important for me, I could met good persons at university that now are my friends.
About Chemestry and Maths, the two failed subjects, I could later pass them, and I realize that I failed because I do not had the base, the basics that they teach you at school and not because I was a kind of limited person (intelectually), and if you make an efford for study, you will be rewarded with good marks and, what is most important, with personal satisfaction.


   

Session 10: CHALLANGES IN YOUR DISCIPLINE!

I think that we as veterinary students are now facing a lot of challenges about our carreer.
To make an structure, I will try to describe this challanges in three main topics, technology, social matters and education.

Firstly, technology is a big problems for us. Our university do not provide us with enough knowledge about it, because it do not has a program based on technology. Our faculty teachs us how to develope without having any help of hi-tech machines, so we learn a lot more in comparison to students from private universities that are used to check all results in a machine because they are incapable to do it for themselves. I must admit that technology is necessary for some stuff, but we can live without it.

About the next topic, Social matters, I can say something really important. As vets, we are subestimated by the society.Ordinary people think that we know less than a doctor and, in fact, they are unable to paid price of ca consult for check their pets, they really think that our studies are worthless!
Another point of view, and fortunately we as men are not involved in, is sex discrimination. Women are saw by the society as less capable to do the job, so for females vets find a work its more difficult.I think that sex its not relevant for doing a good work.

In third place, education challanges are really relevant. I believe that our current "malla curricular" its not related with a good process of learning, because we are overexploted with the subjects, tests and group works thats now are making me in a mess! I have talked with some friends and all of us thinks that make longer the second term of every year will be the best solution, so we will not get stressed and we can store some energy to keep learning things related to animals.

Actually, my personal goals are resist the pressure of this term end, pass all the subjects, learn more about bigs animals, use some medical equipment, and of course, have a good time with friends at university.

Some solutions to this problems would be the implementation of more practical works for learn more about horses and cattles,  make second term longer and women has to demonstrate to society thay they can develope as good as men in work.

In conclusion, we must maintain the prestige of our university demanding more academical activities related with animal and provide us with some high technology resourses.

Time to save the tuna!


Atlantic bluefin tuna are now on the brink of the collapse, that because of their properties and high value as one of the fishes used to prepare Sushi and Sashimi, that get us now to the OVERFISHING ( some of it illegal, unregulated and unreported) of the specie and reducing significatively their number.
Many important scientists support this idea, and recent studies of them show that this type of tuna has declined more than 80% in the last 40 years.

CITES (Convention on intennational trade in endangered spieces of wild fauna and flora) has try to regulate this situation by providing goverments with objective information to evaluate the overexplotation and for stablishment of protective measures. However, a proposal to save atlantic bluefin tuna in the last march was defeated because political games and backroom deals in despite of support of important comitees and countries.
Countries against this proposal argued that ICCAT (international commission for the conservation of atlantic tunas) should be the center to respond to the crisis of this tuna.

Actually, the main solution to aviod the overexplotation of Atlantic bluefish tuna and their future extinction is by suspending the fishery of this specie until strong managment and mesures are in place, and, of course, that this tuna shows signs of recovery. Another solution could be the regulation of illegal extraction of tunas from the sea, that it's unreported.
Now, we must wait until ICCAT acts and if it fail, Atlantic bluefin tuna will be extinct!


Session 8: IMPROVING YOUR FACULTY FACILITIES!

First of all, I must say that I love our faculty....that because it's different from other ones located in the middle of the city. In that places you can not let your stuff in the grass when you are with your friends, so I like feeling safe in where we study.

Obviously, we need some improvements for make easier our study or something that make us fell more confortable.
The first thing that we need, and also the most important, is a new Cafeteria or, at least, try to make it bigger!!!
Its so sad when you arrive to the casino and there are no tables where you can sit...........Although we do not use the cafeteria a lot, that because we enjoy eat our lunch sitting in the grass....but we can not lunch outside when is raining and that were you realise that a bigger casino its necessary.

Another thing that I consider important is the fact that we do not have an interior road between Veterinary and Agronomy, so when you drive to the university (in our case veterinary faculty) and from some reason you need to get to agronomy, you have to take santa rosa.......maybe its not so necessary for some people, but I believe that we need an interior pathway.

A third annoying thing is that the bathrooms are located far from the classrooms (except english classroom)....so when you go to it you lose a big part of a class! and talking about a particular bathroom, the one in front of the casino its really badly designed...it is small and always its dirty. I do not understand how a bathroom can get dirty at 9:10 a.m !!!

About academical improvements, its necessary have more annimals for our practices, more cows, horses and other species for learning...another thing about this area are the classrooms! I do not know if the people in charge notice that in some classes we are like 130 students in the same classroom! that is insane! how they expect that we learn something when you had 129 classmates inside of a classroms. Here are 2 possible solutions for this problem, the first is that the faculty must separate the students in groups and contrating more professors. The other posibility is build bigger classrooms.

This could be a joke for you as reader, but I do not like the table-chairs that we have in the university. Them are uncomfortable and when you get late to a class its a big show try to sit on them ajhajhjahajahaja! Tables are small and everything on it falls to the ground aaagh! in one class I drop, I don't know but al least 3 times the liquid paper ahjahajhja! We need decent tables and chairs!

well, I believe that this is all that we need in our faculty, and that because I like the way that things are now.

Ps: I love mundo granja too and I like all my clasmates, they are really good persons!!!!



Session 7: My favourite movie

Is really difficult choose only one movie to talk about, but I must say that my favourite movie it's Million Dollar Baby!
This movie was directed by Clint Eastwood, who also acts on it.
Million dollar baby its drama genre movie and the plot its about a woman named Maggie Fitzgerald, played by Hillary Swank, she is a waitress who have traveled to a little town looking for a trainer who can help her to reach her dream, be a professional boxer and the champ of the world!

In this place, Maggie inscrinited on a Gym where a lot of boxers trains and met the owner who also is a known box-trainer named Frankie Dunn, played by Cilnt Eastwood. She insisted frankie to train her but he did not want to train a woman because they cry with every punch! Finally, he decided to train Maggie.
In a few months, she won lots of fights and money and resisted painful punches, so Frakie decided to take her to the finnal championship fight against the actual champion, the blue bear, who was a prostitute in berlin when young.
Maggie fought against her and she was winning, but something suddendly happened! after a big hit of her, the blue bear hit Maggie at the middle time when the reffery was not looking! resulting in maggie slaming its neck against a chair on the ring!
When doctors examinates her, they said that Maggie's spine cord was broken and she wil not be able to walk again in her life and now she is disabled!
This situation is so frustrating and sad for the watcher of the movie because all the dreams of Maggie went away in a second.............After a few weeks in a Hospital, doctors cut her leg because an infecction, being the worst for Maggie, who now asked Frankie, her coach, to help her to kill herself! firstly, he refuses the idea, but at the end of the movie, Frankie decided to inject Maggie with adrenalin, putting an end to her pain.................that was the sadness part of the movie and almost everybody cries!

I think that the first time when a watched this movie was the summer of 2005 with my family at the beach...and all of us were crying ajhajahajhajah!
I believe that its a good movie because it teachs you to be concient of the life value...and live every day as it was the last!

Seesion 6: My favourite Animal!

Its really difficult ask to us, as veterinarians, to choose a favourite animal because we love all kind of them.....but first can I tell you what animal I dislike.
In first place, I hate Spiders! them are so ugly, moves slowly and do not make any sense for me having them as pet.
I discovered recently that I dislike Horses too, because them are so tall that makes me feel small and them are so unpredictable...but a have to admit that them are elegant and interesting.

Now, I think that my favourite animal could be one that I can hold and play with, that could be by your side in every situation, and of course, it have to be hairy as a bear..........so my favourite Animal are all Big Dogs!

Big Dogs are so perfect for me, they wait for your arrive at home and show how much they love you jumping around, running a trying to kiss you with a tongue that its bigger than your face ahahajahjajahja.......and they are so big that you can almost ride them and sleep holding them and they do not care, they just stay beside you, they will do everything necesary to show you that they are your best friends at home!
If you have visited my home, you could noticed how much I love Mora, my 3 years old female black Chow-Chow. Mora its so hairy that is like having a little bear in my apartment ajahajahjahja!

Some people think that a big dog its a problem because of the amount of poop that they produce in one day, but I preefer them that having a noisy poddle or chihuahua barking all day long and drilling your ears!

An example of these dogs could be Gauu, the dog that watch sheeps at university...it big enough for me and I know that it love me too ahajhaajha and if I could, some day I will have a big dog as Gauu...
Some breed dogs that I would like to have are Chow-Chow, Akita, San bernardo, Mastín napolitano, Golden retriever, Rottweiler and of course an English Bull-dog because I love the way they walk an look.

I think that after you read this your favourite animal would be the Dog!

Session 5: What to do / Where to go in Stgo!

First, as tourist you should go to Santa Lucia Hill after a rainy day, so you have a view of all over Santiago, with a blue sky filled with clouds that seems soft as cotton, and of course you have to admire de Cordillera de los Andes with snow at the top. Amazing!
And if you like practicing white sports, you should go to El Colorado or Farellones. There you can try skiing, snowboarding, throwing snowballs to your friends, making snowman or just enjoy the view and drink hot chocolate mmmmmmmm ahajahajhajha!

If you do not like the cold, you can visit El Cajon del Maipo and do some trekking and walk between hills, animals and enjoying the natural environment. In there, you will see people doing bungee and jumping of a bridge and screaming aghh! Also you and your buddies can get in of a boat and do Rafting in the river........it could be a nice experience and so relieving! I have not practice it yet, but as classmates we can organize a little study trip and all can splash on the river ajhajhahahjhjahaja!

Another activity, and maybe the most important for people like me is racing in karts! you can found like 4 places in Santiago where you can race against your friends and obviously be the winner.......it is undescriptible the feeling when you are behind the steering wheel and pass the driver in front of you poooooow! you have to try it!

Well,there are many fun activities in Santiago
that you and your friends can do together
just for spending time!



Session 4: Death Penalty

This is one of the best topics that I ever have written and really interesting as well.
I consider death penalty the worse way of crime solution. This practice allow countries and some states to decide what to do with the life of people, or a person who could have a family and friends. But I support this punishment in terrible crimes as murder and rape.

Firstly, convicts maintenance is expensive and our goverment have
to remove resources from good programs to finance this activity.......for example this money could be use for improvements in health or in transport services.

Now, what about if a person
was found guilty of a rape with murder,
or of an assassination?
we must give him another chance to do the same?
I mean, how many convicts really rehabilitate
after they pass through jail?

I really think that prison is like a kind of university for them, where this bad people learn more stuff about robbering, make weapons and fight techniques..........we have to be realist, Chile it's not the perfect place after 10 p.m, at least Santiago (Hey! we study in La Pintana and trips by yourself after this hour could be really dangerous).

Finally, this practice might be as hard like for causing a decrease of crime levels, so we could walk on streets without fear about being attacked.........so all could be Happy!

In short, Chile is far away from this punishment, because implementation of a system like this attemps on human rights and our country is not ready for this situation again.

is just a personal opinion and
I hope that do not bother
anyone who think
different...




A country a would like to visit!

I really would like to go to Canada.
Why is an interesting country?
because it have a different culture and
a higher level of development.....so different from Chile.
I know that is a country with higher levels of education and life status. People lives happy in their homes,
go happy to their jobs, and all that
transforms Canada in a interesting place
to live and in an
oportunity to be really H-a-p-p-y.

Another thing that I like from Canada,
its beautiful natural areas,
and the goberment take care about it,
because they realize that is an important
source of culture and free time activities
for canadian family.

As an example of two ways of thinking,
here in Chile people do not cares about
how many garbage we produce in only one day,
and do not know what we do with it.......we,
as Chileans, are so far away from the Canadiens,
we must move forward in recycling
activities and other ways to care the earth.

What more I would like to do in Canada?
Also I would like to study there,
I do not know if this could happen but if it's does,
It willl be really useful.
After the studies, a big wish could be living in Canada,
have a big house not that far from a city
or a little town and, of course having a job
related to our passion, veterinary medicine.
There, I would be able to have animals
in a kind of ranch and have a family
that supports yourself every day in
home-ranch tasks, learning about different types
of animals and sharing with your sons your experiences.

In short,
Canada could be a place where you can
form a family and livingthe rest of your life relaxed!
it isn't cool? :)

Session 2: Transantiago, before and after

At beginning,
when transantiago system started,
I was not here in the city
because we were on vacations (February)
enjoying the beach and the summer,
so I notice about all the stuff of
the new transport system from the T.V news.

The images tells you about problems like
people who does not know routes, or who was
hunging out in the doors......
for me was very funny because
I was not in Santigo yet.

My opinion is that transantiago
at first point was a good idea,
improving the public transport with new technology,
less pollution, faster travels
and a lot of more advantages,
so it seems really convenient for a big city .

But, when a started with the school
I beginning to live all the disadvantage
of the new system.
For example, the subway collapsed
because most of the people wanted to travel
to their jobs in a safety and punctual transport,
so the angry crowd went to
this transport media and that was
the first problem,
and that still without a sollution...

I hate take the underground,
it's annoying how the people pushhhhhh you
for getting on to the wagons...and getting off was worse.
I prefer to travel to anywhere on buses,
it is lightful and you can breathe Oxigen,
so you do not get sofocated
and less people use it.


What is the worse of buses?
I do not understand how a new bus
can get old that fast,
I mean, all the windows slam against
others so your travel turns really loudly,
including with your headphones you
can still hearing that "lovely sound".

A kind of solution will be
having more transport routes and not more buses,
that because the traffic will turn horrible
if the numbers of machines went up,
so if the new route were available,
trips will be faster and the people happier!
:) :p xD

...but
I conclude that having a car is the best option,
it's confortable, safe, fun, but a little expensive.

Session 1

My last semester in university was really intense.
As veterinary student my priority was pass all
subject with at least 4, and I'm very very happy
because I did it.
The most difficult subject for me was anatomy. I spent a lot
of time studying it, trying to put the main concepts on my head
and training myself for the practical test. Fortunately (and mysteriously)
a got a 4.0 on the integrative test!!! that was the best feel of that semester jajaja!.

Another goal for my in the beginning of the year was came to
the university in bus.
The whole last year I drive from my home to here because
my mom didn't use the car. Now she changed of job, so she uses
the Bólido almost every day............it´s really sad for me :(
But, not all is bad about taking the bus, because
a lot of classmates do it and we get together
in the bus stop, during the travel we listen music and
also talk a lot, making the trip in a good instance for

learning more about your friends an it’s experiences.

The balance of the last semester was really good,
I past al my subjects, met new people and learnt some
important stuffs about veterinary medicine.
